Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 100,000
light years in diameter. It is estimated to include roughly 10 billion
stars, one of which is our sun. A supermassive black hole is believed to reside
at the center of the galaxy where the concentration of stars is the greatest.
The galaxy rotates very slowly making one full revolution every 225
million years. The closest star to us, besides our sun, is Proxima Centauri . It
is 4.2 light years away or approximately 25 trillion miles. A light year is the
distance traveled in one year at the speed of light. (about 300,000,000 meters
per second for a year)
