Amphibians and Reptiles Matt Schmitt, Nat Furr, Students will demonstrate their knowledge of amphibians, turtles, crocodiles and reptiles including the identification and classification of species.
Balloon Launched Glider Jingyi Sun, Emma Rauch Vanderslice, Emma Knight: 8th Place. Participants will design, construct and test a glider that will remain aloft for a maximum period of time. (Building Event)
Disease Dectectives Annie Rauch Vanderslice, Matt Schmitt, Madeline Miller: 4th Place. Students will demonstrate knowledge of biological and physical agents that cause disease.
Ecology Rachel Schmitt, Nat Furr, Emma Knight: 10th Place. Students will answer questions involving content knowledge and process skills in the area of ecology and adaptation by examining different ecosystems.
Food Science Stephanie Newton, Emma Rauch Vanderslice: 9th Place. Teams will be asked questions pertaining to food chemistry, which may include chemical reactions, characterization, and quantification
Meteorology Emma Schultz, Jared Anderson, Sarah DiMagno: This event involves the use of process skills as applied to meteorology.
Metric Mastery Emma Schultz, Ariel Blackman, Alex Souliere: Students will demonstrate an intuitive feeling for estimating and later for measuring different events/objects using S.I. metric units.
Mystery Architecture Katherine Kruse, Marina Blum, Elizabeth Gronewold: 7th Place.Teams are given a fixed set of materials and design criteria to construct a device which performs a specific function that can be tested. A construction time limit is imposed.Oceanography Rachel Schmitt, Katherine Kruse: 2nd Place.Teams will work at stations that display a variety of earth science materials and related earth science questions.
Reach for the Stars RuthAnne Carlson, Margery Dunkle, Sarah DiMagno: 9th Place. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of constellations, stars, clusters, and galaxies.Road Scholar Rachel Schmitt, Nat Furr, Sarah DiMagno: 2nd Place. Requires the accurate interpretation and understanding of various map features using a variety of road and topographic maps.
Rocks and Minerals Madysen Leubke, Jared Anderson, Josh Jones: 7th Place.Students will identify, describe, and classify various specimens.
Science Crime Busters Margery Dunkle, Stephanie Newton, Emma Knight: 7th Place.Teams will identify the perpetrators of a crime or crimes by using paper chromatography and analysis of unknown solids, liquids, and plastics found at the scene of a crime.
Science Word Madysen Leubke, Katherine Kruse, Alex Souliere: 5th Place.Teams will take turns using a set of scientific terms or concepts while the other team member guesses the terms.
Scrambler Jingyi Sun, Margery Dunkle, Josh Jones: Students will build a device which uses only the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a straight track, stopping as close to a barrier as possible without breaking the egg.
Tower Marina Blum, Ariel Blackman, Elizabeth Gronewold: Teams will design, build & test the lightest tower to carry a maximum load. (Building Event)
Trajectory RuthAnne Carlson, Annie Rauch Vanderslice: 5th Place.Teams will design, construct, calibrate and operate a device capable of launching a projectile far and accurately using the energy of a falling counterweight. (Building Event)Write It/Do It Emma Schultz, Madysen Leubke, Alez Souliere: A technical writing exercise where students write a description of a contraption and other students will attempt to recreate it using only the written description.
Irving Finishes 5th at 2008 State Tournament
The 2007-2008 Irving Middle School Science Olympiad team finished 5rd out of 21 middle
school teams in the state tournament held April 5th on the East Campus of the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Medals are awarded for 1st through 5th place and the
Irving team earned medals in 6 of 19 events. The team consisting of 15 members and
6 alternates began working in November to prepare for the state tournament. Team members
researched, studied, designed, built, tested and retested entirely on their own initiative and
on their own time. Coaches Tom Kay and Sean Clough acted as advisors and mentors only.
Irving Middle School has a long tradition of participation in the event with 2008 marking the
21st year of competing in the 21-year-old tournament. This year ended with the 20th TOP 5 finish for Irving Middle School.Congratulations to the team for a noteworthy effort and a fine result.
