Irving offers differentiated classes in 6th grade math and Language Arts, 7th and 8th grade English, Science, and Social Studies, 7th grade PreAlgebra and 8th grade Algebra. Based on guidelines mandated by the LPS Gifted Policy adopted by the School Board, Irving's gifted program is under the supervision of a Gifted Program Design Team. The composition of this team is determined annually. Cindy Zetterman is the gifted facilitator and is the chairperson for this team.
Students are referred to the gifted program by parents, staff, and community members. Once a referral is received, a Data Gathering Team is convened to evaluate the student's record. This team includes the student's current teachers as well as the facilitator and the psychologist. Information considered includes achievement test scores, Test of Cognitive Skills results, SCAT scores, previous I.Q. testing, outstanding student products and/or behavior checklists prepared by teachers and parents.
Copies of the District Policy and the Irving Plan are available upon request to all parents and staff. Contact Cindy Zetterman if you would like a copy or have further questions.
From the gifted facilitator....”Duke Talent Search” is on!
By now many of you have received letters regarding the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Students qualifying are those who:
1) scored in the 95% on the national norms of a standardized achievement, aptitude, or mental ability test in an approved subtest category.
2) are in 7th grade
3) attend school within TIP’s 16-state region. These identified students are invited to complete either the SAT I or the ACT Assessment college entrance examinations. The Talent Search provides an opportunity for highly able students to pursue an out-of-level testing experience.
Once you have returned your Talent Search applications to Duke TIP (should you choose to be a participant), you will receive either a SAT or ACT information packet.
If you do not receive your information packet within 5 weeks of mailing your application, you should contact Duke TIP immediately!
Please note the NOVEMBER 1st postmarked deadline for taking the test in Jan.(SAT) or Feb.(ACT) The deadline for the December testing was Oct. 2nd.
