Irving Parent Teacher Student Organization (IPTSO)

September Meeting Notes

Dear Parents of Irving Students:

My name is Barb Stuart and I am the current President of the 2006-2007 Irving Parent Teacher Student Organization (IPTSO). I would like to welcome you to the new school year. It is a very special year for our school, as Irving Middle School is 80 years old! Your children can expect some special surprises throughout the year as we celebrate this occasion.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to join IPTSO this year. The cost of membership is only $5. You will receive the Irving Student Directory and be supporting the students and staff at our School. Membership dues, fall magazine sales and the book fair in the spring all provide funding for IPTSO. In turn, IPTSO is able to provide important improvements for Irving. Last year we accomplished the following:

We welcome all parents, regardless of IPTSO membership to attend our board meetings which are held the 3rd Wednesday of every month (except December and January) at 1:30 pm at Irving. Please check the office when you arrive for the meeting location. If you are unable to attend these meetings, but still would like to be involved, please contact myself or my Vice President, Jane Oman (joman@smithhayes.com) There are many ways you can volunteer within our committees.

IPTSO needs parents to join this organization to support the hardworking staff and caring teachers as well as to enhance the students learning experience during their brief but important time at Irving Middle School. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, welcome and thank you for your support.

The Story of Hallam Sculpture Coming to Irving!

Hallam resident, Laura Edmongs, remembers May 22, 2004. That is the day 95 percent of her community was destroyed by tornados, leaving her and her neighbors homeless and displaced. Along with the material devastation, the community lost valuable members. But many, including a 92-year-old woman, have returned to rebuild. The community has even attracted several new residents.

The Story of Hallam and the subject of my (Larry Roots) sculpture is a tree derived from human forms...a tree which is both a landmark and a metaphor for the "twisted" human experience. It is my intent that this work be experienced on several levels visually, notwisthstanding the environment of sound and personal testimony.

I have learned that one never ultimately knows another's anguish...but we can witness universally the ability of the human spirit to overcome adversity.

I have chosen brick-fired endacott clay for its natural-direct formability and for permanence in an interior or exterior siting. The sound track is remastered interviews documented by fellow artist Julia Lauer-Cheenne.

Thank you, Hallam.

Irving is excited about having Mr. Roots' sculpture on display in our media center from Nov. 20 to Dec. 1st. A special reception will be held in our media center on Monday, Nov. 20, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30. The artist and others will be here. Refreshments will be served. Anyone and everyone is invited.
